Erg Chebbi, better known as the Merzouga Dunes, is one of the two major ergs of the Sahara in Morocco. Some of its dunes reach up to 150 meters in height. Erg Chebbi is located near M’Hamid El Ghizlane, the other major erg being Erg Chigaga. The spectacular golden dunes of Erg Chebbi are among the most remarkable in the Sahara. They stretch endlessly between the famous Ziz Valley and the Algerian border. The town of Rissani, the former terminus of trans-Saharan caravans, is a charming oasis in the Ziz Valley. Erg Chebbi is located in Tafilalet, in the southeast of Morocco, about 40 km south of Arfoud and near the Algerian border. The dunes extend for 22 km in length and 5 km in width. The tourist hub is the village of Merzouga, located at the foot of the first dunes.
